On the day of former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral, President Trump’s tweet paying respects to the 41st US leader elicited rare praise from Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, who has remained one of Trump’s most outspoken Republican critics.
President Trump said that the funeral was more of a “celebration for a great man who has led a long and distinguished life,” adding, “He will be missed!”
Despite tension between the Bush and Trump families following Trump’s victory over Jeb Bush to secure the 2016 Republican nomination, the president and First Lady Melania have extended their condolences to the family since the 94-year-old’s death.
Looking forward to being with the Bush family. This is not a funeral, this is a day of celebration for a great man who has led a long and distinguished life. He will be missed!

Flake, a prominent critic of Trump who has drawn the condemnation of Republicans across the nation, broke from his usual tone with a simple “Well said, Mr. President.”
While the Arizona Senator’s comment offered rare praise, his contentious relationship with Trump, having lasted nearly the entirety of his presidency, did not win him any fans among supporters of the president.
Well said, Mr President. https://t.co/CVQerqotMT
