Trump Shreds NY Governor Cuomo on Late Term Abortion in Private Meeting

When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo headed to the White House on Tuesday to speak with President Trump about taxes, the notoriously anti-Trump Democrat got more than he bargained for when the president treated him to a lecture on abortion.

A spokesperson for the White House said Trump grilled Cuomo regarding the state’s high taxes, as well as extremely controversial stance on late-term abortions.

The White House additionally stated that “the president raised his concerns to Governor Cuomo about Democrats’ support of late-term abortions,” which has been the subject of national headlines in recent weeks.

Speaking to the press following the meeting, Cuomo slammed Trump, who he accused of meeting with him in an effort to sow “political division.”

From The New York Post:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo went to the White House Tuesday to talk about the federal tax code with President Trump — and got an earful about New York’s high taxes and its new abortion law.

Cuomo is pushing for a revision of the new tax code, which limits state and local deductions (SALT) to $10,000.

“He did say he was open to discussing the SALT issue,” the governor said on WCBS radio afterward. “And the president did say he would like to see if he could put together a package of reforms together.”

But the White House said Trump “talked about the positive impacts” of the tax changes “and the president listened to the governor’s concerns regarding SALT.”

Trump also “reiterated the negative impact that high taxes in states like New York have on hardworking families and job creators” and discussed economic growth opportunities in the state such as fracking — which New York bans, said deputy press secretary Judd Deere.

“And the president raised his concerns to Governor Cuomo about Democrats’ support of late-term abortions,” he added.

Cuomo left without talking to waiting reporters.

Instead, on the radio show, he argued the administration has to take his concerns seriously because the House is now controlled by Democrats and “if they want to get any bill passed they’re going to have to get the Democratic Congress to support [it].”

Cuomo said he wasn’t surprised that abortion came up.

“Politically, the president always throws the same pitch. This is a president who governs by division. It started right from the very beginning, Muslim travel ban, rich versus poor, racial division, this is now political division,” he said. “He met with a Democratic governor so they feel constrained to reiterate their divisions with the Democrats.”
